The Soldier's Sweetheart

Once there were two sweethearts
Two sweethearts brave and true
Her hair was dark and curly
His loving eyes so blue
He told her that he loved her
And he often proved it so
And he often came to see her
When the evening sun was low
But fate took him away
To that awful German war
And when he came to say goodbye
His heart did overflow
He says goodbye little darling
To France I must go
He took a golden finger ring
Placed it on her hand
Said remember me little darling
When I'm in no man's land
He promised he would write to her
That promise he kept true
Though when he read this letter
I pray this war is through
Second letter she recieve from him
The war lay just ahead
The third one wrote by his captain
Said her darling dear was dead
She kept all of his letters
She kept his gold ring too
And she always lived to single life
For the soldier born so true
